Here´s an example of automation:
Each day an accounting dept receives a file on disk in a special format. Information from this file needs to be extracted and entered into an Excel spreadsheet. This task takes an employee 2 hours to accomplish. The work is tedious, repetitive and error prone. Would you want to have to do that for ¼ of each work day? Since computers are excellent at repetitive tasks, we wrote a small program that accurately accomplishes the same process in less than 10 seconds. In short, we saved the company 40 hours a month, which in a very short time more than paid for the program. We also saved the sanity of the unfortunate individual that was tasked with the data entry.
